THE undeveloped flower-buds of Sophora japonica, a leguminous plant growing in the north of China, contain a yellow colouring niatter, which has been examined several times without any definite conclusion as to its nature having been arrived at. Stein (J. p. CJzem., 58, 399 ; 85, 351 ; 88, 280), as well as Spiess and Sostmann (Arch.
