A methodology is presented for prototyping flexible, custom embedded systems using low-cost reconfigurable hardware, open-source FPGA-ware, and open-source software. This is done through a case study of the complete design of a custom embedded system. The system is intended as a lowcost, flexible, and reconfigurable platform with multimedia and networking capabilities, for prototyping interactive entertainment applications. The system features an FPGA system-on-chip design supported by a custom
