NOTES FROM OBSERVATORIES 369 mediate handicaps to locating flare stars in the evolutionary scheme are ( a ) the observational selection effect imposed by selecting Mtype dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, and ( b ) the restriction to the discovery of flares in intrinsically faint stars imposed by the detectability of a flare in the total light of a star.
