We lay mathematical foundations for an interaction-based model for multi-agent complex systems. Emergence and evolution of such systems are analyzed in light of the model. Various hierarchical levels within such complex systems are observed and the nature of interactions among such levels and among units within the levels are studied. The modification of the identities of the units is also examined. Scenarios are briefly mentioned from psychology and social history to suggest possible future
