Tackling Road Traffic Congestion in a Developing Country-A Contemporary Approach

An assessment of the traffic congestion in a developing country-Nigeria has been undertaken using available data. A proposed roadmap using current innovative strategies to tackle the perpetual problems has been outlined, with individual elements well described. Reorientation of the current transport policies towards efficient public transport services and integration of the contemporary tools including communications, space reallocation, and car restraint measures is suggested for an immediate
more » ... d for an immediate impact in the traffic conditions, especially in the congested cities and towns. Enforcement of fines high enough for deterring offenders and for self-financing of the service, and road pricing on main highways are ways of supplementing governmental funding on road transport. In general, the accomplishment of the proposed plans could only be achieved by strict compliance and most importantly, the genuine desire of the ruling federal and state governments for its success.
