The Pechtnann condensation of phenols with ethyl α-(α-hydroxy-βββ-trichloroethyl)- acetoacetate has been studied with a view to finding the effect of -CH(OH)CCl3 group as an α-substituent on the course of the reaction. Various coumarins containing -CH(OH)CCl3 in 3-position and their derivatives have been synthesised.
