Resumo: Neste artigo questiona-se porque é que, sendo o objetivo econômico a motivação inicial para o estabelecimento da CEDEAO, os fracos resultados constatados a esse nível não constituíram um impedimento à continuidade e ao avanço da integração. The interpretative insights were derived from historical and political context in dialogue with the neofunctionalist theory of regional integration. The article's main argument is that the challenge of sub-regional security led to the addition of political objectives. Understanding that there is a new convergence of interests, the bloc will be in constant search of a consistent institutional matrix including the objectives which were added, and on the other hand, reflecting the degree of involvement of the various national groups that determine the external behavior of each member country.
