We are currently in the midst of a revolution in communications that promises to provide ubiquitous access to multimedia communication services. In order to succeed, this revolution demands seamless, easy-to-use, high quality interfaces to support broadband communication between people and machines. In this paper we argue that spoken language interfaces (SLIs) are essential to making this vision a reality. We discuss potential applications of SLIs, the technologies underlying them, the
more » ... s we have developed for designing them, and key areas for future research in both spoken language processing and human computer interfaces.
