Assim, na parte final do artigo, essa terceira possibilidade será discutida, com suas implicações sobre os gêneros poéticos e historiográficos. ABSTRACT This paper presents an overview of literary criticism of ancient Latin poetry, from the biographical readings of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries to the radical views, starting with Allen (1950), which interpreted this poetry as absolute fictional constructions based on the poetic architecture that permeates such poems. However, after the radicalism of the anti-biographical critic, a third possibility is now being studied: if the poet gives his own name or if he uses the names of historically identifiable characters, this must be considered as an extra element to the poetic iocus-he is intentionally making the boundaries between res ficta and historical truth indistinct. Thus, in the last part of the paper, this third possibility will be discussed, with its implication on the poetic and also historiographic genres.
