While drawing on theoretical concepts of vocational education, and backed empirically by a survey amongst journeymen, this study describes and analyses both the historical and the present-day journeyman years with a focus on their functions for the vocational training. more » ... earning is increasingly demanded in the context of Europeanization and globalization, and continually advancing professional skills are required. From the subjective point of view of the journeymen, too, the journeyman years offer numerous educational opportunities. The survey amongst journeymen documented and analysed here sheds light on their motives for individual journes, and their educational effects. With regard to the dimensions of vocational training's quality, the journeyman's years emerge as an institutionalized form of informal vocational learning, or as an intangible educational institution of informal vocational training.
