Summary Bivalent germanium compounds GeX 2 and PhGeX where X=F, CI, were generated by direct reaction between germanium powder and corresponding mercuric halides e.g. HgX 2 and PhHgX. Difluorogermylene was isolated by sublimation, other halogermylenes (GeCI 2 and PhGeCI) were characterized by trapping cycloaddition or insertion reactions. Mass spectroscopic characterization of some reaction intermediates suggests successive S.E.T. reactions and the transient formation of germyne. Characterisation of the insertion products or cycloadducts, when these are formed in very low yields, was made by analytic comparisons (CPV, RMN and mass spectroscopy) with authentic samples synthetized by other ways.
