Economic Impact of Introducing Longer Trailers in Ontario

This paper assesses the economic impact on Ontario shippers of introducing longer trailers. Ontario held off until 1993 to introduce 53' semi-trailers and at the time of writing this paper, Quebec still had not passed legislation to accept such trailers. Further to the east, New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Newfoundland have recently accepted longer trailers. This paper considers the impact on Ontario shippers of accepting longer trailers in Ontario and forecasts the impact of acceptance in all of

This paper is based on research conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MT0)1 in its consideration of the economic and safety considerations associated with introducing longer trailers in Ontario. Our research included interviews and surveys with shippers, shipper associations, carriers and government representatives.
