This article contains the findings of an empirical study conducted in the Region of Western Greece, Greece (Prefectures of Aitolia-Akarnania, Ilia and Ahaia). The study concerns the attitudes of local population towards immigrants in the area, covering various aspects of their incorporation into the local economy, labour market and society. We place special emphasis on the local public attitude differentiation according to political self-placement, gender, age, education, income, place of

Research findings show that there is a major differentiation between general public attitudes towards immigrants with responses to more concrete and specialised questions. While general attitudes are more positive, specialised responses are, in most cases, characterised by greater hostility towards immigrants and xenophobia. Individuals who reside to the Prefecture of Aitoloakarnania and in urban areas, women, the young, individuals with higher educational level and respective occupations, those who defined themselves as centre-leftists or leftists and those who were employers of immigrants, either at the time of research or in the past, are characterized by more positive attitudes towards immigrants.
