In recent years the need for polymers with specific mechanical and physical properties has increased in proportion to the number of applications of plastics, rubbers, and fibers. These needs can be filled by the choice of (1) tailor making polymers with specific properties, (2) modifying existing polyners to achive the desired properties, or (3) synthesizing new polymers based on previous experiences of other workers.
