Abstract: Manuel Correia de Andrade (1922-2007) is one of the main references when referring to economic formation of the northeastern Brazilian complex. In the wide range of his work, the author came to discuss, with a multidisciplinary vision of productive social relations and their influence on the formation of the socioeconomic structure of the northeast. This study aims to expose and discuss the hypothesis of the author regarding the territoriality of the culture of sugarcane and of livestock, with emphasis on livestock in the form of interrelation between the two cultures in the occupation of the northeastern territory of Brazil.
