E-ELT is a 40m-class telescope which will have its first light in 2024 and will enable unprecedented discoveries about the origin of planets, stars and galaxies. E-ELT will be equipped with 5 instruments, including HIRES, a high resolution spectrograph which will make it possible to search for life signatures in the atmospheres of Earth-like planets and to study the possible variation of the fundamental constants of physics.
