URBAN CONTEXT AND EMPTY LOTS: LOOKING AT THE CITY OF SOROCABA ABSTRACT: The investigation takes Sorocaba City as an urban context with the purpose to draw the "image of the city" that the user builds when he gets involved with the empty lands inside the city. We based this paper on the ideas of Ferrara and Lynch about the urban context, Levy's ideas about anthropologyc spaces, and we used the Speculative Grammar, a branch from the Peirce's Semiotic, for the analysis of the selected pictures of the city. The importance of this investigation is to consider the urban context as a comunicational space.
