UNRWA is the largest UN operation in the Middle East, with over 27,000 staff, almost all of whom are refugees themselves. Originally envisaged as an organisation with a temporary mandate, UNRWA'sprogrammes have evolved to meet the changing needsof the 4.3 million Palestine refugees living in the GazaStrip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
