Several applications of CT-based navigation, imageless navigation, and fluoro-navigation have been developed and utilized in orthopaedic surgery. In CT-based systems, preoperative planning and surgical simulation are performed on the preoperatively acquired CT images and surgical procedures are navigated with high accuracy. It is, however, costly and time consuming to use CT images, planning, and registration. Imageless navigation using intraoperatively acquired kinetic and morphologic

Fluoro-navigation reduces the imaging time and x-ray dosages in fracture surgeries and spine pedicle screw insertion. 3D fluoro-imagebased navigation is now possible with the arrival of 3D imaging C-arm fluoroscopes. Intraoperative 3D imaging and real time 2D3D registration updates are key technologies for further improvement of the accuracy and safety of navigation surgeries and for minimully invasive orthopaedic surgery.
