... al Abdel-Gawad who belongs to the generation of 1919 revolution, at a time of stagnation of the national movement when it turned from a popular revolutionary battle to a political issue. The revolution in this period turned into a political contest between the ruling elite, Al-WafdParty and colonization. It was a partisan conflict. The same generation witnessed a vital global shift. The younger generation was more ready to interact with the outside world and to be influenced by it. Such circumstances were the setting of the protagonist, which reflected the dilemma of estrangement of a generation which confronted the triumphant European civilization. The protagonist had to restructure the Egyptian civilization. It is clear that the intellectual and emotional dilemma lies at the heart of our problems. The protagonist reflects the progressive and revolutionary aspect that heralds the future values. The paper is divided into an introduction and four sections. Thefirst is the emotional estrangement of the protagonist in the ‫حمفوظ‬ ‫جنيب‬ ‫ثالثية‬ ‫يف‬ ‫البطل‬ ‫اغرتاب‬ ٜٕٙ frame of class consciousness. Then, the second section tackles estrangement and the moment of recognition and conversion. After that, I demonstrated his attitudes towards life and ideological estrangement. The concluding point underlies the protagonist between metaphysical rebellion and the belief in science.
