Mitochondrial dysfunction with increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a characteristic feature of diabetes which is associated with damage of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Alcohol metabolism generates ROS with enhanced oxidative stress leading to damage of cellular constituents including mtDNA.
