Previous studies have shown that serum interferon (IFN) production in mice is quantitatively influenced by If loci, whose alleles determine high or low production. Although different loci influence IFN production in response to different inducers, such as Newcastle disease virus, Sendai virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, and polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid, BALB/c mice are in every instance low producers.
