The two striated muscle cell types, skeletal and cardiac muscle, express overlapping sets of muscle-specific genes. Activation of muscle-specific transcription in skeletal muscle is controlled by the MyoD family of regulatory factors, which are expressed exclusively in skeletal muscle.
