Analytical and stochastic modelling methods are widely used in engineering to assess and design various technical and information systems, such as computer and communication networks, software systems, and distributed systems. The contributions in this issue cover a wide spectrum of stochastic models including advances in queueing analysis, performance evaluation of telecommunication systems, optimization and control under uncertainty, and Markovian models. Although the above-mentioned

Most of the papers appearing in this issue are extended versions of selected presentations given at the 19th International Conference on Analytical and Stochastic Modelling Techniques and Applications (ASMTA2012), held in Grenoble, France, in June 2012. The ASMTA conference series is a main forum to discuss the latest developments in analytical, numerical, and simulation algorithms for stochastic systems, including Markovian processes, queueing networks, stochastic Petri nets, process algebras, game-theory, etc. The editors of this special issue hope that it will contribute to advancing the state-of-art of analytical and stochastic modeling.
