In his comment on this case Crosskey has suggested that a neotype should be designated for Musca lancifer Harris, [1780], the proposed type species for Hydrophoria. since Harris's illustration (p. 126. pi. 36, fig. 59 ) is inadequate to distinguish the taxon by modern standards. As mentioned by Crosskey and by Pont & Michelsen (1982) no Harris specimens of this (or other) species are known. We agree with Crosskey's suggestion, and propose that a male specimen in the Department of Entomology,
