T his descriptive study analyses possible psycho-social problems for mothers of children carrying Down Syndrome. It was carried out in a Treatment and Early Stimulating Unit in a Brazialian university. A structured outline of interviews was prepared for data collecting, and applied to a group of 13 women with children carrying D.S. regularly attending the unit. Bio-psycho-social impairments were identified in those women not only for the D.S. diagnosis suffered from their children but for a certain fear to society pre-concept. The lack of knowledge and information about the illness as well as the paramount importance of an early stimulation and treatment contributed to magnify those adapting problems. Fue desarrollado en un servicio de tratamiento y estimulación precoz, de una universidad brasileña. Fue utilizado un guión estructurado de entrevista para recogida de datos, aplicado en un grupo formado por 13 mujeres que poseen hijos portadores de este síndrome acompañados en el referido servicio. Los comportamientos fueron codificados y agrupados con base en los problemas comunes de adaptación presentados por Callista Roy. Se constató que los problemas de adaptación se concentran en el modo del autoconcepto. Se verificó que los trastornos biopsicosociales identificados en estas mujeres fueron causados tanto por el diagnóstico del Síndrome de Down, que acometió sus hijos, cuanto por el miedo del preconcepto.
