The nature and role of Higher Education within a society is always evolving, as society itself changes. If, for example, economies are changing to being knowledge based, universities are a key element, since they are the holders, the creators of and the disseminators of knowledge. This paper seeks to identify some of the changes in Higher Education that have already occurred in some countries and their consequences e.g. commercialisation, globalisation and harmoriisation.
