The advancement in medical knowledge could have not been possible without interlocking and reinforcing the bedside-lab continuum. In the field of pediatric neurology, one of the best illustrative examples is our quest for finding neuroprotective therapies in the setting of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. In this review, we discuss the careful clinical observations driven from the bedside dating back to the work of Frank Ford. We trace the relentless efforts to emulate the pathogenesis
