Escherichia coli producing the genotoxin colibactin (CoPEC or colibactin-producing E. coli) abnormally colonize the colonic mucosa of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. We previously showed that deficiency of autophagy in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) enhances CoPEC-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in ApcMin/+ mice.
