Pentax-AWS Airway Scope: the Current Status and Future-Is the Macintosh Laryngoscope No Longer Necessary?-

Conventional laryngoscopes are not ideal, as it may often be difficult to see the glottis, even with extension of the patient' s head. The Pentax-AWS, a videolaryngoscope, allows one to see the glottis, with the patient's head in the neutral position, and guides a tube into the trachea. The success rate of tracheal intubation using the Pentax-AWS has been shown to be high in patients in whom intubation using the conventional laryngoscope has failed. more » ... e the mainstream for tracheal intubation, as they have clear advantages over the conventional laryngoscopes. Nevertheless, our ability to use the conventional laryngoscopes should be maintained, as videolaryngoscopes are not perfect.
