603 Synopsis Paddy fields and d置 tches around irrigation creeks co 皿 stitute temporary waters fiooded only in summer . In order to consider the sign 愉 ca 皿 ce of such tcmpOrary waters fbr fishes , the movement and behaviour of 血shes in temporary waters and a pemlanently 飢 盈 ed creek were investigated near the town of Yagi , Kyoto Prefecture. Among twenty ・ three spec 量 es identified in the study area , seven specics frequent 玉 y cntcrcd the tcmporary waters , six of which utilized these waters
more » ... s spawn 孟 ng sites . Two sp ies were seldo 卑 found in the temporary waters , in spite of their abun dance in the permanent creek . Thc remaining fourteen ident 迅 ed sp ies were rare in the study area . F 三 shes which frcquently utilized the tomporary waters for spawning had a similar reproductive habit , i. e . , they scattered many eggs widely and showed no parenta韮 care . 11t is cohside 重 ed that many 丘shcs , 量 ncluding juveniles , were foraging on tho p 正 a匚 nkton which nc abundant in the . te 印 porary waters after irrigatio 血 It is surmised that newly emerged habitats of te血 porary watcrs with high productivity serve for tho maintenance of a rich 血sh fauna in irrigation creeks .
