The article highlights the stages of development and characteristics of the activities of the department, controversial issues regarding the final determination of time of department's foundation are eliminated. The advocated provisions of the article are proven by archival documents. It includes the material about the beginning of the discipline's teaching. The contribution of the famous scientist, the founder of social hygiene as a science and educational course, one of the first physician­academicians, Minister of people's health and wardship O. Korchak­Chepurkivskyi is defined. The activities of the department's heads as well as their contribution to the educational and research work on social hygiene are traced. Sequence on changing name of the department at the time of its existence is shown. Educational courses, activities of the department, which are educational­methodical and scientific work, training of scientific and teaching personnel, advanced training of scientific and teaching personnel, consulting on medical­social and statistical issues are mentioned in the article.
