A pure S-type star found in the SMC is described. The extreme rarity of such stars relative to C and M giants is shown by Magellanic Clouds surveys for red giants. For the S star, M bol is -5.1 ± 0.1, a value in fair agreement with that found for the few known galactic counterparts with reliable distance moduli; and one near the faint limit expected theoretically.
