Incidence of ankle fracture among general population

Ankle fractures are among the most common injuries treated by orthopaedic surgeons. Approximately 2% of the general population will sustain an ankle fracture during their life. This study was done to study incidence of ankle fracture among general population. The present study was carried out over a period of 5 years. more » ... aving various types of fractures. Motor vehicle accident (MVA) was the most common cause of ankle fractures (67.34% of all study subjects. Among all fractures 231 (8.6%) were ankle fractures. The medial malleoli (40.2%) was the most commonly injured bone of the ankle and the least common was the posterior malleoli (2.2%). Study of ankle fracture involves a careful examination, appropriate imaging, understanding of the fracture pattern, and technically favorable management.
