Mechanical Characteristics of Uniform Space-filling Helically Wounded-woven Structures

In this paper, a simple geometrical modeling is introduced to get a better understanding of uniform space-filling spatially twisted truss structures. With a simple mathematical model of truss assemblies, their geometrical characteristics and boundary arrangements are surveyed, and also the stiffness and strength are tailored. more » ... epeating unit cells or sub-unit cells are categorized by a set of appropriate truss geometry enabling one to get explicit expressions relating the stiffness and compliance of their twisted members. The equivalent modulus for three different twisted assemblies (tetrahedral-/octahedral-lattice and sphere cored lattice) are studied by the volume average method within the repeating unit cells or sub-unit cells. Several examples are introduced to illustrate the application of present modeling, and to show that the equivalent properties of sub-unit cells on a latticed truss are considerably dependent on the geometrical architecture.
