В той же час досі немає загальноприйнятого визначення категорії «місто», що є наразі актуальним науковим питанням, особливо для суспільних географів. В статті розглянуто еволюцію дефініції «місто» на різних історичних етапах людської цивілізації. Особлива увага звертається на визначення категорії місто в системі взаємовідносин «людина» -«територія» представниками вітчизняної та зарубіжної науки. Розглянуто еволюційний зв'язок та дихотомію категорій «село» -«місто». Проаналізовано трактування поняття «місто» як «єдності несхожих» на основі концепції територіальних спільнот в місті. Викладено особливості управління розвитком міста з точки зору проживання в ньому різних типів територіальних спільнот.
