A More Rapid Presumptive Test for Coliform Bacteria in Water

it has been possible to prepare a culture medium for detecting coliform bacteria in water that yields results in 12 hours or less. The method depends upon three factors: the complete inhibition of the growth of gram-positive bacteria by the use of an alkyl sulfate, the rapid reduction of nitrates by gram-negative bacteria, and the use of a large inoculum of water. The medium appears to be efficient for the presumptive test, and confirmation can be accomplished in the usual manner. MEDIuM
