An attempt to obtain β-selinene (I) by the pyrolysis of 4-acetoxyrnethyl- 6-(α-acetoxymethylethyl)-9-methyldecalin (IV) has been described. A synthesis of (IV) has been reported, and proof of the structure of the important intermediate, methyl 6-methyl-6-ethoxycarbonylcyclohexanone-3-α-propionate, has been provided.
