Development of a Hi-Vision display system with a 42-inch-diagonal DC-type PDP is described . The configuration of the signal processing is discussed, and processing methods for the PDP are proposed . Development of signal -processing LSIs and ICs for the driving circuit is also described . A pre-filter is needed for DC PDPs to avoid color aliasing . However, the sharpness of the displayed image is degraded by the filter. This degradation was compensated for by using an optimal-image enhancer .

In some cases, an unnatural color was perceived in dark areas of the displayed images. To avoid this artifact , a pre-processing method for error-diffusion processing is proposed. Four signal-processing LSIs and two ICs for the driving circuit were developed . A high-quality 42inch Hi-Vision PDP receiver, "Nagano Model" , was thereby achieved.
