Resumo: Durante a segunda metade do século XIX, época do surgimento e apogeu do impressionismo, a literatura parece às vezes abandonar suas intenções narrativas para se dedicar, por alguns instantes, à descrição do espaço. Marcel Proust identifica na obra de Gustave Flaubert os primeiros momentos desse abandono ao afirmar que « o que até Flaubert era ação torna-se impressão ».
