Ramp metering is a very popular and effective way to prevent traffic congestion on freeways. Many different control strategies depending on the traffic characteristics and/or features of the freeway were implemented. Whatever strategy is used, it must be effective not only in terms of preventing traffic breakdowns or supporting recovery from congestion, but also of the simplicity of solving the mathematical problem underlying the control strategy.
