THE PRODUCTION OF SUGAR AT THE BORDERS OF MODERNITY: the course of Henrique Augusto Milet (Pernambuco, 19th century)
2012
Clio: Revista de Pesquisa Histórica
Milet was one of XIXth century Pernambuco's most vocal members of the sugar cane planters' class. He published several books, and his participation in documented debates among important landowners reveals the profound adaptation of a foreign engineer. Milet's original ideas about the frontiers of modernity mix a deeply conservative social point of view with anxiousness for change in both a technical and institutional sense.
