Cases of Ulcerative Colitis in Father and His Son. Association of HLA Antigens with Ulcerative Colitis in Japan

A father and his son were admitted to Hiroshima University hospital and were diagnosed as having ulcerative colitis. The father (69-year-old) had moderate left-sided colitis which was improved by medication. His son (39-year-old) had severe total colitis and total colectomy was performed. Concerning HLA haplotype, they have A24, B52, DR2, DQ6 (1) which has been revealed to be associated with ulcerative colitis in Japan. These cases suggest some immunologic and genetic factors are part of the
more » ... ologic factors of ulcerative colitis. The mean age at onset of the familial occurrence of ulcerative colitis in Japan is about 30 years. These cases are comparatively rare.
