Abstract. -The optical properties of oxides may be altered by the application of electrochemical anodic or cathodic treatments. Such treatments also affect the behaviour of the metal-oxideelectrolyte system in electrochemical reactions which involve electron transfer through the oxide. Correlations between such modifications of optical and electrochemical properties of oxides are described, for noble as well as electropositive electrode materials. Combined Ellipsometric and Reflectometric measurements were used for the optical characterization of the oxides. Article published online by EDP Sciences and available at http://dx.
