Teacher Evaluations: Problems and Possibilities

Across the United States and internationally states, districts, and schools are in the process of developing teacher evaluation systems. The measures being used to determine the future of P-12 teachers often do not utilize appropriate multiple measures and factors that need to be taken into account in the evaluation of teachers. more » ... s vary in beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, self-efficacy, motivation, learning styles, cultural influences, and demographics or social identities (e.g., sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, ability/disability, socioeconomic status, religion/spirituality, etc.). Typically the many levels of diversity just noted are typically not considered in calculating the teacher evaluations. This paper advocates use of multiple measures in evaluation of teachers and suggests key issues that need to be considered in teacher evaluations.
