Resumo: Este artigo visa tratar do caráter imaterial das emoções, segundo a perspectiva cartesiana, enquanto são afecções da alma. Nascidas no plano da união substancial e causadas pelo corpo, elas não podem, entretanto, ser redutíveis a elementos físicos e quantitativos. Pensadas segundo o dualismo substancial cartesiano, nossas emoções, em si mesmas, são experiências subjetivas que não podem ter sua natureza compreendida a não ser qualitativamente. Descartes and the reverse of matter Abstract: This paper aims to discuss the immaterial characteristic of emotions, according to the Cartesian perspective, as they are affections of the soul. Born in the substantial union context and caused by the body, they can not, however, be reducible to physical and quantitative elements. Thought according to the Cartesian substantial dualism, our emotions, in themselves, are subjective experiences whose nature may not be understood but qualitatively.
