The most recent assessment of the genus Rhytidiadelphus was presented by Koponen (197Ia). In this treatment he proposed the separation of R.japonicus from what had been confused with R. calvescens (Wils.) Broth. He also demonstrated that the correct name for material assigned to R. calvescens was R. subpinnatus (Lindb.) Kop., if that species is segregated from R . squarrosus (Hedw.) Warnst.
