This study is a contribution to the 'class debate'. The class and hierarchy perspectives are discussed within the context of the discussion on cross-class families. The author presents a modified neo-classical approach to the classification of cross-class families: the position of the spouse whose class culture is supposed to be better-crystallised counts. ... lasses do not cover the whole population and strata are not 'subclasses'. (2) A modified Goldthorpe class schema based on the previous hypothesis is presented. (3) The joint and modified neo-classical classifications of cross-class families (especially of workers' families) are discussed. Hypothetically, joint classification suits better the situation where the class cultures amalgamate (the embourgeoisement of the working class). The modified neo-classical classification suits better the situation where the middle class and strata are proletarianised. The embourgeoisement and proletarianisation theses are not meant in terms of Popper's historicism. They are rather two competitive tendencies. (4) A hypothetical stratification system of the Czech Republic based on the previous hypotheses is presented. The desirability of qualitative research (alongside classical representative surveys) in this regard is stressed in the conclusion. 1 ) Jak je v sociologii téměř všeobecně zvykem, není ani v teorii a výzkumu sociálních nerovností pojmový aparát jednotný. Pojmem stratifikační systém (sociální stratifikace) rozumím více či méně hierarchické uspořádání určitých segmentů společnosti lišících se životními podmínkami těch, kdo je tvoří. V rámci teorií a výzkumů zabývajících se tímto problémem rozlišuji přístupy třídní a hierarchické (viz následující text). Domnívám se, že v literatuře lze pozorovat sílící tendenci používat tyto pojmy právě v uvedeném smyslu.
