The Catcher in the Rye is regarded as one of the most popular modern classics in American literature, and the hero of this novel, Holden Caulfield, also is one of the most famous characters in American literary history. On the basis of analysis of the symbolic meanings of the imagery of articles, surroundings and protagonist in the novel, this paper explores Holden's rebellion, radical ness, enthusiasm and his inner world-the lonely watcher in the rye.
