Extended Abstract In the fifties of last century, the question "Can machines think?" was an object of many spirited discussions and debates. Exaggerated expectations were the norm, with no exceptions. In an article "Thinking machines-a new field in electrical engineering," published in January l950, I began with a sample of headlines of articles which appeared in the popular press in the late forties. One of them read "Electric brain capable of translating foreign languages is being built."
